Bode Miller (born October 12, 1977), is an award-winning skier from Easton, New Hampshire. He has won two Olympic silver medals and multiple world championship gold medals.
Samuel Bode Miller was born to Jo and Woody Miller, who chose to live a relatively simple life in a town of less than 300 people. Their house was in the woods and did not have any plumbing or electricity. By the time he was five, he had already taken up skiing and was one of the best in his age group. Until he reached the third grade, he was homeschooled. His parents watched his talent on the slopes grow, so during HS, he went to Maine’s Carrabasset Valley Academy, where he polished his skiing skills. There, his technique – which he has described as finding any way to ski “as fast as the natural universe will allow” – was unorthodox, so he had to make his own way.
This worked wonders for him. He finished third in the 1996 Junior Nationals and was able to make the national team. He then joined the World Cup team, where his stardom grew as he placed high in a number of races. He was part of the US Team during the 2002 Winter Olympics, where he won two silver medals. Since then, his name has become associated to reckless skiing and unpredictable behavior. He once flew thousands of miles during the Olympic Games – between his races – to visit the Jay Leno show, and he’s been known to party hard the night before an important race. Nevertheless, his fans have many years to watch his skiing career flourish.
